It is in this scene that Monte Cristo proposes a marriage between he and Tjanja. She turns him down claiming he is just another of her Uncles dogs and was sent to court her like the others. Only on hand to do her uncles bidding and to keep her in check. MC is outraged by this and tells her what he thinks about Her uncle and that the truth of the matter is that her other Uncle, the one chasing her was the one who told him where to find her. MC leaves without listening to another word from her.
However the two are thrown back together as they must escape the onslaught of the secret police set on them by Alessandro. The Uncle warns MC, as he can't find Tjanja to tell her and so he requires his help. MC know's where she is because he locked her in a cellar until he had decied what to do with her. On seeing her Uncle and MC after a day of being locked away she demands what's going on and before she gets an answer is bundled into a carriage... just in time to avoid the raid on the house that would have taken Tjanja ... her Uncle however is caught and killed in the raid (as Tjanja had got word to her friends in the mountains to come and rescue her, they arrived at the same time the secret police turn up... a bloody gun fight insues), and the two escape into the night ... (leads onto the chase chapter)
